Each domain is assigned a registration status that determines where it is within the registration lifecycle.  It is normally shown as a line of text by itself, rather than using any technical syntax.

The following table shows the possible values and a description of what each means.  This explanation here is intended for registrars:

Value Description
Registration request being processed A registration request for the domain name has been received and the domain name has been created, but the invoice has not yet paid.  There is a delay between the receipt of the request and the production of the invoice, so this is quite normal to see.
Registered until expiry date The domain is fully paid up and no further action is required.
Renewal request being processed A renewal request for the domain name has been received, the expiry date is now showing the new expiry date, but the invoice has not yet been paid.  There is a delay between the receipt of the request and the production of the invoice, so this is quite normal to see.  If the invoice is not paid within terms then the expiry date reverts to the old expiry date and the status changes.  In that case the new status depends on whether it is before or after the old expiry date.
Renewal required The domain has gone past its expiry and either has not been renewed, or a renewal request was received but the invoice was not paid within terms.
Renewal invoice being processed [DEPRECATED] This only appeared with our previous renewals system.  It should not now appear for any domain name.
