Contacts are an important part of our systems as they enable the registrant to have access to our online services in the same way that registrars can access our online services for their accounts.

Introduction

Each account has up to three admin contacts associated with it and up to three billing contacts. You must supply at least one admin contact, but the billing contacts are optional and should only be supplied where we have a direct billing relationship with the registrant (e.g. billing is set to "bc").

It is important to note that at least one of the admin contacts supplied MUST contain details of the registrant, including their email address. This is to ensure that the registrant has access to our online services. Other admin contacts can be used for other purposes, provided this is made clear to the registrant and they consent.

Contact objects

Whenever you register a new domain name onto a new account then contact objects are created automatically for that account. Contact objects cannot be created independently. Each contact object contains specific data fields.

Contact objects attached to the account object

The account object has three numbered slots for the admin contact objects, numbered a1, a2 and a3. It also has three numbered slots for the billing contact objects, numbered b1, b2, b3. The rules governing contact objects and these slots are:

  • There must always be a contact object in a1.
  • Contact objects in a2 and a3 are optional.
  • Contact objects in b1 are optional.
  • Contact objects can only be in b2 and b3 if an object is in b1.
  • One contact object cannot be assigned to more than one admin slot or more than one billing slot

Modifying contact objects

Contacts can be modified in one of two ways:

  • Using the contact MODIFY operation by specifying the id(s) of the contact object(s) to change. This will modify the contact directly, irrespective of how it may be used by its parent domains or account.
  • Using the MODIFY operation and specifying the fields that refer to the numbered contact slot. For example modifying 'a1-name' or 'a2-email'.
