You can use the release operation to move a domain name from your tag to another tag.  There is no equivalent operation that allows you to take control of a domain name from another registrar's tag.

When you use the release operation, be aware of the following:
  • A release operation cannot be revoked.

How to release a domain name:

  1. Create a new email message to applications@nic.uk
  2. Use the subject TAG Release (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters).
  3. Use the following template in your email message:

    operation: release
    key:
    registrar-tag:

    Notes:
    • It is mandatory to include values for the 'operation:', 'key:' and 'registrar-tag:' fields.  For more information on template fields, see our field definitions.
    • To detag a domain name, set 'registrar-tag:' to 'DETAGGED'.
    • To release multiple domain names, you can repeat release template separated by a blank line up to 100 times.

  4. PGP sign and send the email.

You will receive confirmation from the Automaton if the operation is successful.  If a handshake is required by the new registrar, then you will instead receive a handshake response from the Automaton.

You will receive an error from the Automaton if the operation is unsuccessful. For help identifying and resolving an unsuccessful operation, see our error messages page.
