You can use the delete operation to cancel a recently registered domain name.  This operation should only to be used to cancel a domain name registered in error.  In order to prevent registry abuse, like domain tasting and domain front-running, use of the delete operation is limited by the Automaton's Acceptable Use Policy.

When you use the delete operation, be aware of the following:
  • The delete operation will fail if:
    • You have exceeded the limits in our Acceptable Use Policy on the delete operation.
    • The domain name has been released or transferred to a new tag.
    • The registrant is currently requesting to transfer the domain name to a new tag.
    • You have paid the registration invoice for the domain name.
  • If you delete a domain name after Nominet generates a registration invoice, you must still pay for the domain name.  The registration invoice will be generated at midnight at the end of the seventh day in the month following registration.
  • You must not use this operation as part of any scheme where domains are intentionally registered, but cancelled before billing because their characteristics or attributes do not meet some requirement, or to benefit in any way from a brief period of registration without payment. This is a strict rule and there is no permitted acceptable level.
  • You must not use this operation to engineer a transfer to a third party and avoid the transfer process. This is a strict rule and there is no permitted acceptable level.

How to delete a domain name:

  1. Create a new email message to applications@nic.uk
  2. Use the subject TAG Delete (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters).
  3. Paste the following template into your email message:

    operation: delete
    key:

    Notes:
    • It is mandatory to include values for all the fields in this template.  For more information on template fields, see our field definitions.
    • To delete more than one domain name, you can repeat the 'key:' field separated by a blank line up to 100 times.

  4. PGP sign the message and send the email.

You will receive confirmation from the Automaton if the operation is successful.

You will receive an error from the Automaton if the operation is unsuccessful. For help identifying and resolving an unsuccessful operation, see the error messages page.
