The Automaton can be used to undo a renewal request. If you have accidentally renewed a domain name, you can use this operation to reverse the renewal. The unrenew operation is only available for a limited time after you have submitted a renewal request for a domain name. For more details, see information about our renewal processes

When you use the unrenew operation, be aware of the following:
  • The unrenew operation will only be successful before a renewal invoice is generated. (Midnight at the end of the 7th day in the month following renewal).
  • We will send an email to the registrant notifying them of the cancellation.
  • If your registrant asks you to renew the domain name again, you can submit a second renewal request, but you will not be permitted to cancel the second request.

How to unrenew a domain name:

  1. Create a new email message to applications@nic.uk.
  2. Use the subject TAG Unrenew (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters).
  3. Use the following template into your email message:

    operation: unrenew
    key:

    Notes:
    • It is mandatory to include values for all the fields in this template.  For more information on template fields, see field definitions.
    • To unrenew more than one domain name, you can repeat the 'key:' field up to 100 times.

  4. PGP sign and send the email.

You will receive confirmation  from the Automaton if the operation is successful. In addition, a notification email will be sent to the registrant of the domain name.

You will receive an error from the Automaton if the operation is unsuccessful. For help identifying and resolving an unsuccessful operation, see our error messages page.
