Am I obliged to make a registrar transfer at the request of my customer?
Yes, the Registrar Agreement clearly states that the registrar has a duty to make a registrar transfer promptly at the request of a registrant.  If registrars are found to be abusing this duty, we will take steps to address the situation with the registrar.

How can I move a domain name from my tag to that of another registrar?
If you want to move a domain name to another tag, you should use the Automaton RELEASE operation, the Standard EPP <epp:transfer> or Nominet EPP <epp:transfer> command.  If you need to know the name of the tag to which the domain name is to be moved then see the list of all tags.

If you are transferring only one domain name, the domain name and its account will be moved to the new tag.

If you are transferring a domain name and there are other domain names on its account, the domain name will be moved to the new tag and given a new account unless you specify the ID of an account that already exists on the new tag.

How can I tell if a domain name has been moved to my tag?
You can set the registrar change handshake option through your account in our online service to determine how domain names are accepted on to your tag.  You can accept or reject all requests for registrar changes, or you can ask us to obtain your authorisation before a domain name is transferred to your tag.

After a domain name has been transferred to your tag, we will send you a registrar change notification by email.  This will include registrant information as well as the registration status and the expiry date.

What happens if the original registrar refuses to release the domain name to a new registrar?
If the current registrar is either unable or unwilling to release the domain name we can assist.  The registrant will need to complete the registrar transfer (tag change) through their account in our online service and pay the registrar transfer fee.

How much do you charge for making a registrar change?
We do not charge for changes processed through our registrar systems (that accounts for 95% of transfers we carry out).  However a charge of £10 plus VAT is payable for registrar transfers that we process.  If the tag needs to be changed for a group of domain names and the registrant for all the names in the group is the same, there is a discounted rate of £15 plus VAT.  This discounted rate is only applicable for two or more domain names where the registrant is the same.

Why do you make a charge?
The £10 fee is based on what it costs us to make these changes.   As a not-for-profit company, it is important that we recover the costs for the services we provide.  These specific charges mean that only those who create the additional workload actually pay for it, rather than spreading the cost across all registrants.  The charge is reviewed regularly.

How do I know if there are any outstanding registration fees?
Whenever a domain name is transferred to your tag we will send you a registrar change notification by email.  This will tell you the registration status and expiry date in addition to the registrant information.

What does the registrant initiated registrar transfer process involve?
1. The registrant logs into their account through our online service and navigates to 'your domains - registrar change'.

2. The registrant select the domain name(s) they wish to transfer and chooses the tag that they would like their domain name(s) to be transferred to.  We advise the registrant of the registrar change policy that has been selected by their new registrar.

3. The registrant pays the transfer charge by credit or debit card.

4. If the new registrar has set the registrar change handshake option to always accept or accept for existing customers, the registrar change will be completed immediately.

5. If the new registrar has set the registrar change handshake option to always handshake or handshake if new customer, the new registrar is given up to five days to confirm their acceptance.  If they do not accept or do not respond, the transfer will be rejected and the fee refunded.

Will you inform the relevant registrar before the changes occur?
We will only advise the new registrar before the changes occur if they have selected the always handshake or handshake if new customer options for registrar transfers.  After the changes occur we will send a registrar change notification email to the new registrar.

If the registrar change has been initiated by the registrant, we will notify the previous registrar that the domain name has been transferred from their tag.

How long will it take to process a registrar change through the system?
The registrar change process is an automated service.  The timescale involved depends upon the registrar change handshake option chosen by the new registrar.

If the registrar change handshake option is set to always handshake or handshake if new customer, the new registrar is given up to five days to confirm their acceptance.  If they do not accept or do not respond, the transfer will be rejected.
