In order to generate the school name element of the .sch.uk Domain Names we have used the process outlined below to achieve Domain Names where each combination of the Third Level Domain (3LD) and Fourth Level Domain (4LD) is unique.

Each school name as listed in the database supplied by the Register of Educational Establishments (REE) is divided up by word.

For example: 'Churchgate CofE Primary School' is split into the following words - 'Churchgate', 'CofE', 'Primary' and 'School'.

Each word is then converted into lower case and all non-alphanumeric characters are removed.

All non-identifying words are removed e.g. 'school' and any mention of the school's phase or religion is also removed unless these words are required to create a unique Domain Name.

The following standard abbreviations and syntax are used:

  • If the school's name includes a Saints name the word 'St' becomes 'st-' and is prefixed to the 4LD.
  • If the school's name includes the word 'st' but it is not the first word of the school's name then '-st-' is appended to the 4LD.
  • If the school's name has plural 'saints' the prefix 'ss-' may be used.
  • Certain words are abbreviated as follows:
    primary -pri -primary
    junior -jun -junior
    infant -inf -infant
    middle -mid -middle
    nursery -nur -nurs -nursery
    infants -inf -infants
    preparatory -prep
    technology -tech
    secondary -sec
    comprehensive -comp
    college -coll
    pupil referral unit -pru
    special pupil referral unit -spru
    pupil learning support services -plss
    tutorial unit -tu
    Pupil Support Centre -psc
    Learning Centre -lc
    community college -cc
    international -int
    Church of England cofe
    Roman Catholic rc

Where indicated these abbreviations are always separated from the proceeding words in the Domain Name by a hyphen.

  • If the school's name contains words that are shown on the abbreviation list then '-abbreviation' is appended as a suffix to the 4LD.
  • All the remaining words of the school's name are strung together to form the 4LD.
