Notice: Nominet UK has been instructed by the British Educational Communications and Technology agency (BECTa) in conjunction with the National Assembly for Wales Department for Training and Education (DfTE) to rationalise the Welsh .sch.uk Domain Name register. This will result in a standardised .sch.uk Register of Domain Names for Wales. As such no further applications will be accepted for Welsh .sch.uk domain names via the Nominet automated system.

Every school in Wales will be allocated with a standardised .sch.uk domain name. These are available for registration now and any school needing to register their domain name should ensure that they have returned their 'School Names on the Net reply form.

The structure of the .sch.uk domain names will remain:

<school name>.<area>.sch.uk

A list of the Welsh geographical sub-domains that can be used by schools is available.

Existing schools will have a domain name registered by Nominet which will be provided to them free-of-charge. Maintained schools should contact their LEA or Nominet if they need to confirm the domain name that has been allocated to their school. Independent schools should contact Nominet directly. The domain names that are being allocated by the School Names on the Net project have been created using the naming guidelines.

New schools, and schools wishing to change their designated name should contact Nominet* to register a name of their choice. Proposed names will be checked against the register and will be rejected if there is a conflict with an existing name or if they do not follow the format for .sch.uk domain names (shown above).

Where two or more schools in an LEA have similar names, e.g. St Mary's, then a school seeking to change its designated name must confirm that the other schools have been consulted before seeking to change its domain name.

If a school wishes to register a domain name that is not accepted by Nominet the request will be referred to DfTE.
