Since there have been so many major breakthroughs and inventions in the history of the internet it is hard to pinpoint the beginning of its existence to one particular day. We’ve summarised some of the top milestones that have been recognised in the past.

    Eleanor Bradley, 3 August 2012
Over the last year we have been running a major initiative to spring clean the information we hold for .uk domain names. The report shows that .uk registrations grew by 10.5% over the past 12 months, bringing the total number of domains to 9.7 million by the end of September 2011. .uk also maintains its position as the world’s second largest country code registry after Germany’s .de.

At its last meeting, ICANN - the international body responsible for looking after the internet domain name infrastructure (.com, .co.uk and the like) decided that a number of generic top level domains (or gTLDs) could be created.
  • Evolving Internet governance for the new connected world

    Lesley Cowley, 23 September 2011
‘Internet governance’ means different things to different people, and indeed the term has evolved over time.  In the early days of the internet, the job was to establish the basic rules of the road to allow the internet to function effectively: just making sure everything worked together and behaved itself was often a challenge! We needed common standards, a robust addressing scheme, and of course the Domain Name System.
