At our Extraordinary General Meeting on 22 November 2006 our members voted to expand our scope, enabling us to bid to run other Internet registry services, such as UK ENUM.  Our members also voted in favour of enabling electronic voting and communication, to enable simplified voting and increased participation.

A breakdown of the results of the votes is available.

You can also access the web cast of the EGM.

The UK Internet market has changed significantly since Nominet was founded in 1996 and the opportunities and challenges we now face are significantly different.  Our original Memorandum of Association was deliberately drawn up to be very narrow and the threshold for making changes to the Memorandum is unusually high, requiring a 90% majority to agree a change. This protects the company's unique position in the UK Internet industry.

Nevertheless, our members have voted in favour of these changes, recognising that we now have opportunities which they would like us to be able to address.

We are now able to bid to become the UK Tier one registry for ENUM, an internationally approved method for connecting the telephone communications network to the Internet, utilising the domain name system.

We are delighted with this result.  We are now equipped to meet the challenges facing us, and to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the market, for the benefit of our membership.

We would like to thank all the members who have voted.  Turnout was approximately 20%, a marked improvement on many of Nominet's previous votes.  We would also like to thank all of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to make this meeting a success.
