Nominet derives its authority from:
The UK Internet community - this includes all end users of the Internet in the UK as well as Nominet members. Anyone with an interest in the internet can become a member of Nominet. Its 2800 members have a strong influence on how the company is run.
The UK Government - Nominet is acknowledged by the UK Government as the manager of the .uk country code Top Level Domain. Nominet is in regular contact with UK Government departments, who increasingly recognise the domain name system as a critical part of the country’s commercial infrastructure.
Nominet UK also plays a role in the worldwide development of the domain name System and policy, being represented in international discussions by senior members of staff.
Nominet is an active member of the Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries (CENTR) - formed in April 1998 to provide a mechanism for national ccTLD Registries to exchange information and develop best practice.
