ENUM Launch - 7 October 2008
On 7 October we launched the UK ENUM service and are now accepting applications to become ENUM registrars.
The first stage in making an ENUM registration is for appropriate organisations to become ENUM registrars. Full details about the
ENUM registrar application process is available.
Once you have become an ENUM registrar you will have access to our
ENUM registration system. The registration system uses extensible provisioning protocol (EPP). As well as the live EPP system we maintain an
ENUM testbed for developers to test their ENUM EPP implementation. Further information about the testbed is also given below.
Any registrations made prior to the launch on 7th October 2008 (i.e. those made during the UK ENUM trial period) will cease working.
Validation
To register an ENUM, the telephone number must be validated. The
validation process is required to prove that the registrant is the end user of the telephone number and entitled to the ENUM registration. This validation process can only be carried out by an accredited validation agency (VA). It is possible for ENUM registrars to also become validation agencies and self validate ENUM registrations on behalf of their customers.
All validation agencies must be accredited by the
UK ENUM Consortium (UKEC) and will be required to sign up to their terms and conditions. Accredited VAs will also be able to validate third party numbers on behalf of registrars. The validation process produces the validation token that is required to successfully make an ENUM registration whether provided through self-validation or by an external validation agency.
ENUM testbed - 9 July 2008
The ENUM EPP testbed was launched on 9 July 2008. It provides a safe 'sandbox' database to allow registrars to develop and test their systems. Anyone interested in becoming an ENUM registrar can have access to the test system.
Details of how to register for and get access to the testbed server are included in our ENUM EPP documentation.
If you are interested in ENUM developments we suggest you subscribe to our ENUM working group mailing list.
We held an ENUM registrar information day on 28 July 2008 in London and are planning further events. Subscribe to the ENUM working group to ensure you get the latest information about ENUM developments.
