Thursday 6 March 2008

16.00 - 18.00 followed by drinks reception

Location

Attlee Suite, Portcullis House, Houses of Parliament

The event has All-Party Parliamentary support from PITCOM, Eurim and ApComm and is presented by Nominet in collaboration with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Rt Hon Alun Michael MP.

The UK has taken a leading role within Internet Governance internationally. UK delegates at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Rio included parliamentarians, BERR, Nominet, the London Internet Exchange, Confederation of British Industry, the Coalition on Internet Safety, Amnesty International, Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, Oxford Internet Institute, Childnet International and the NSPCC and others, including businesses.

At the Rio meeting, Rt Hon Alun Michael MP made a commitment on behalf of the UK "Team" to create a multi-stakeholder UK IGF to support the international process and show what can be done through commitment to joint working at the national level. Several countries are showing interest in this UK initiative and MEPs are now taking a similar initiative at European level.

The event will feature:

  • A report back from the IGF in Rio.
  • Official launch of the UK IGF.

Key components of the UK IGF:

  • Plan of action from now until Delhi
  • Best Practice Challenge 2008
  • Crime Reduction Partnership
  • Promoting grass-roots online participation
  • Supporting the dynamic coalition between child protection and free speech organisations

What is the future of the Internet - and who will decide?

Such questions are now being asked in the International community. The IGF grew out of successful British diplomacy - and has the potential to show how a partnership approach can work internationally better than bureaucracy.

And in October - when the UK's "Internet Community" was consulted on UK messages for Rio - there was strong support for the proposal to establish the UK IGF to provide an umbrella framework for practical initiatives and examples of IGF themes. Based on that discussion, involving Industry, Government, Parliament and Civil Society, we made a commitment to the international community at the IGF in Rio. And now we come to the action:
