We have a total of 115 members of staff, including six members of the senior management team plus two executive directors.

We are governed by a Board that includes two executive directors, and four non-executive directors who are elected every two years.

Supported by a Senior Management Team, day-to-day operations are carried out by the following departments:

Operations Department

The operations team is split into two departments. Customer Services provides support to domain name holders (registrants) and to Nominet’s members and registrars.

Operations Support provides internal support for the Customer Services team.

Customer Services


For holders of .uk domain names,  support provided could include:
  • Providing support on all aspects of registering .uk domain names
  • Transferring the registration of a domain name to another party
  • Dealing with requests from registrants to renew domain names in cases where the service provider or registrar has not made the renewal
  • Processing requests to cancel domain name registrations
  • Transferring a domain name from one registrar to another
  • Processing requests to update the contact information held against a domain name to ensure we have accurate and current details
  • Responding to queries about data accuracy and information relating to domain name registrations
  • Supporting registrants through our Online Service

For registrars and members of Nominet we provide support on the following:
  • General support by telephone and email
  • Technical support for registering PGP keys and using the Automaton
  • Applications for the Public Register Search Service, Domain Availability Checker and WHOIS2 services
  • Membership and tag applications
  • Registrar agreements and adherenece to the Good Practice Terms
  • Opening new credit accounts
  • Managing credit accounts and issuing monthly invoices and statements to registrar
  • Allocating all inward payments made by cheque, credit or debit card and bank transfer
  • Handling the accounts of registrars who are no longer trading or are in liquidation
  • Organising regular Registrar Information Days

Technical Department

The Technical Department is responsible for the operation of Nominet's core information infrastructure. This includes: maintenance of the authoritative primary name server for the co.uk, me.uk, org.uk, net.uk, plc.uk and ltd.uk zones; liaison with operators of current authoritative secondary sites; and the design, implementation and maintenance of the UK register database and related services.

We have a team of developers who work on designing and delivering new software applications to be used internally and by our external customers.

The Advanced Projects Team works to shape the development of the Internet by developing key security protocols such as DNSSEC and innovative technologies such as UK ENUM.  The team represents Nominet on a number of key Internet technology committees as well as at RIPE, IETF, ICANN and other global conferences.

The Technical team is also responsible for the evaluation, procurement, installation and maintenance of all computer and network hardware and software as well as the implementation of monitoring software.

Legal Department

The Legal Department is responsible for administering Nominet's award-winning Dispute Resolution Service (DRS) which operates on the basis of mediation.

In addition to the DRS the department also provides legal advice for Nominet's other service departments and is responsible for the drafting of contracts such as Nominet's Terms and Conditions and the Registrar Agreement.

The department also deals with policy development, insurance and risk.
 

Marketing  and  Communications Department

The Marketing & Communications team is responsible for the communications, PR and media relations and marketing of Nominet and .uk.

They are responsible for all external communications to Nominet’s members, registrars and other stakeholders and all internal communications within the company.  This includes the web site, press releases, Nominet’s management blog Insight, and writing and production of external documents such as the annual Report and Accounts, the Domain Name Industry Report and the Nominet Best Practice Challenge brochures.

The team supports Nominet’s sales channel of registrars by providing a variety of marketing materials and manages all advertising campaigns.  The team is also responsible for organising external events, including our AGM, a series of Nominet lunches, the Nominet Internet Awards ceremony, the .uk registrar conference and our staff company day.
